A.  Have an area of specialty. The best way to increase your profits is to start honing your skills in specific sub-specialty.  In order to build your skill set, you need to study the strengths and weaknesses of your team.  And every season you must reevaluate the change in not only the player roster, but also the staff and coaches.

B.  Objectively assess teams. Do not let your biases influence your gambling decisions.  Even if you are a huge fan of a certain team you are checking out, do not show favoritism.  Take a look at the probability of them winning and do not let your emotions get in the way.
